Never keep a dog outside and confined all the time. I have come across many people who do this, and their justification is to firstly objectify the dog, and then to justify their treatment of the dog by saying that it’s for their house’s security or their shop’s security. I absolutely despise this kind of person.
Let’s not dice words. Keeping a dog outside all the time, chained up or behind a fence, is abuse and neglect. At first I was timid about it, because the kind of people who do this tend to have obnoxious opinions about what they consider ‘right’ and ‘wrong’, and more often than not outright expect others to share the same views as though they’re self-evident.
But after seeing a particular ‘guard dog’ escape this kind of condition, capturing him with kindness (mostly out of concern that he’d get hit by a car) and returning him to his owner, I realized the owner was problematic, not the dog.
This dog had been kept outside in a small fenced concrete area outside the owner’s wood shop ALL THE TIME. Even in the dead cold of winter. He had a doghouse, but that really means nothing when it’s below freezing. Dogs are not wolves. Most dogs are not like huskies or akitas who are adapted to cold environments.
When I returned the dog, the owner said he was ‘gonna have to’ put the dog down. I asked why. ‘Does he have some disease or disability or something?’ The guy said no, but that rather, the dog was problematic, barking all the time, trying to escape all the time, and that he had bitten people. He then told me he was surprised that the dog didn’t bite me. I practically begged him to give the dog to me. Told him I’d look after the dog and give him a forever home til the end of his days.

The look in this guy’s eyes was unmistakable. He couldn’t make eye contact with me, because at the root of it, he KNEW he was wrong. Of course a dog will try to escape being confined for its entire life. Of course a dog will be defensive when it has been confined and neglected. This kind of person projects their own insecurities onto the dog and then blames the dog for the negative results.
This dog was so sweet and happy around me. He was not aggressive toward me or any of us, and he made friends right away with my friend’s dog. Maybe I just have a way with dogs because similar things have happened before. Every single time, I’ve seen that the owner arrogantly sees the dog as a tool solely there to serve them instead of a living being with needs and emotions. These people, as a genre, tend to have massive egos and microscopic reproductive organs…..
After that jerk put that dog down, I lost my ‘filter’ and no longer care to tiptoe around this kind of person. I let ’em have it. Every time. And you should too.
I never should have returned this goodboy.
In retrospect, I’m so glad I took this picture. Rest in peace, buddy. I’m glad I at least got a couple of hours to be your friend.
