After the first month of the puppy, weaning from the milk can begin and can be introduced to solid food.
But what needs to be considered when choosing a puppy’s first food?
The breed and size of your puppy are the two most important factors in choosing its first food.
Many
breeds have specific energy and health requirements, and food tailored
to the puppy’s nutritional needs ensures that it gets everything it
needs for a healthy life.
The size of a dog has a significant effect on the food it needs as well as how it eats, digests and reacts to different foods.
Make
sure you choose your puppy’s first food based on their likely adult
weight (which you can find out by breed and in discussion with your
veterinarian).
The food is designed to meet the health needs of a dog of this size, so you give your puppy the best possible start in life.
Nutritional requirements
The puppy’s breed and size determine what kind of energy, maintenance, and health support it needs from its food.
Small and very small dogs have weaker jaws and smaller teeth than large dogs.
In order for them to chew their food easily, the food must be suitable in both size and composition.
Food must also be able to be easily moistened when weaned.
Medium-sized dogs usually spend a lot of time outdoors.
Their food must therefore contain sufficient energy and strengthen their natural defenses.
The defense includes their skin and fur, which protect dogs from bugs and disease.
Large and Giant-sized dogs grow more slowly than smaller dogs, and their muscles develop at a later stage of growth.
They need food that supports this continuous growth and whose composition and shape fit the size of their mouth.
Appropriate food slows the rate of eating and makes dogs bite their food carefully.
Protecting against potential health problems
All puppies have a sensitive digestive system due to the strain caused by rapid growth.
This can be very noticeable in large dogs.
The most suitable food for them is nutritionally balanced and designed to be digested as easily as possible in the body.
Similarly, smaller dogs may have dental problems such as tartar buildup.
Taking care of the oral hygiene of puppies of all sizes is very important.
The right size pieces can help here as they make the puppies bite their food.
During
the growth phase, the muscles of large and giant dogs grow rapidly on a
large spine, putting a risk of joint strain or stress.
Therefore, a first food suitable for these dogs contains nutrients that support the health of their joints.
Dogs of all sizes need to have support for their immune system at 4 to 12 weeks of age.
The
puppies 'natural immune system is then weakened when the antibodies
received from the mother no longer protect them and the puppies' own
body is not yet able to defend itself effectively.
The first food chosen for a puppy must support its immune system during this crucial time.
